HOBAN Recruitment is recruiting for the role of Assistant Director - Policy Officer on behalf of our client, located in Sydney or Canberra.
This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced policy professional to lead the development and delivery of strategic policy initiatives that influence government priorities and outcomes. You'll play a key leadership role driving complex projects, providing high-level policy advice, and engaging with stakeholders across the Australian Public Service and beyond.
About the Role
In this influential position, you will:
- Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of complex policy initiatives, preferably in a First Nations context.
- Provide high-level strategic advice to senior executives and decision-makers.
- Prepare high-quality Cabinet submissions, ministerial briefs, and discussion papers.
- Navigate and coordinate complex government and parliamentary processes.
- Conduct research, analysis and stakeholder consultation to support evidence-based policy outcomes.
- Manage large-scale policy projects, ensuring timely delivery and alignment with government priorities.
- Represent the agency at interdepartmental committees, forums and stakeholder meetings.
- Contribute to strengthening internal policy frameworks, processes and capability.

About You
You will be a strategic thinker and proven leader with the ability to drive meaningful policy change. You will bring:
- Demonstrated experience leading complex public policy initiatives, ideally in a First Nations policy context.
- Strong understanding of Australian Government policy, Cabinet, and ministerial processes.
- Proven ability to prepare clear, persuasive and high-quality policy documentation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong analytical capability.
- Confidence engaging and influencing senior stakeholders.
- Sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
- Tertiary qualifications in public policy, law, economics, political science or a related field (desirable).
