Workshop Technician - Mechanical and Projects

Location: Hawthorn
Hours: 8:30am to 4:20pm | 36.75 hr/week

Join a leading university supporting cutting-edge teaching and research across engineering and physics. This is a hands-on role, ideal for a trade-qualified professional or practically minded graduate who enjoys mentoring students while applying mechanical skills in a workshop setting.

About You

You will bring strong hands-on mechanical experience and be comfortable working across a mix of workshop, lab, and stakeholder-facing responsibilities.

• Trade qualification in a relevant mechanical field or recent graduate
• Extensive experience maintaining, repairing, and fabricating mechanical equipment
• Strong workshop capability, including use of lathes, milling machines and other machine tools
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and plan work processes
• The ability to train and supervise others, including students or junior staff
• Solid knowledge of OH&S practices in a technical environment
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing tasks

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise and guide students in a practical workshop environment
• Interpret technical drawings and specifications to determine materials, methods, and operational sequences
• Fabricate, fit, and assemble components and subassemblies to specification
• Oversee rapid prototyping facilities, including 3D printing and laser cutting (where applicable)
• Perform general workshop maintenance and maintain a safe, organised workspace
• Ensure compliance with all OH&S policies, inductions and safety procedures

• Willingness to work across multiple campuses as required
• A current Working With Children Check (or ability to obtain)
