A State Government department is seeking an experienced Senior Materials Engineer to join their Sustainable Infrastructure division. In this critical role, you'll provide expert technical leadership in materials engineering, supporting the safe, cost-effective, and sustainable delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure.
You'll act as a subject matter expert across the organisation, influencing design decisions, driving Safety in Design outcomes, and ensuring adherence to industry-leading technical standards.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Leadership
- Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with WHS responsibilities
- Lead and promote Safety in Design (SiD) principles across engineering projects
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to minimise design-related risk across the asset lifecycle
Technical Expertise
- Provide specialist investigation, design, and technical audit services
- Act as the organisation's SME in materials engineering and corrosion prevention
- Lead technical oversight in cathodic protection systems and practices
- Ensure timely, accurate, and cost-effective engineering advice
Collaboration & Team Contribution
- Work closely within multidisciplinary teams across engineering, projects, and operations
- Contribute to knowledge sharing, workshops, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Support capability uplift through training and technical guidance
Governance & Standards
- Champion and maintain engineering standards and guidelines
- Conduct site audits and educate stakeholders on best practices
- Ensure outcomes meet asset lifecycle, regulatory, and business requirements
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Identify and assess emerging technologies in materials and corrosion protection
- Drive improvements and value-add initiatives across the discipline
- Stay current with industry best practice and technical advancements
About You
You are a highly experienced materials or corrosion engineer with a passion for safety, innovation, and technical excellence.
Essential
- Degree in Materials, Mechanical, Civil or Structural Engineering
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) - Engineers Australia
- Strong experience in technical standards, auditing, and infrastructure design
- Deep expertise in materials engineering, corrosion, and asset integrity
Desirable
- Experience in water or large-scale infrastructure environments
- Knowledge of cathodic protection design & specifications
- Affiliations with relevant bodies (e.g. ACA, NACE)
- Experience leading complex investigations and technical problem-solving
Additional Requirements
- Current driver's licence
- Willingness to travel (intra/interstate) and work flexible hours where required
- Ability to obtain required clearances (police, medical, immunisations as applicable)
