We are recruiting two Senior Mechanical Engineers to join the South Australian Government on a 12‑month full‑time assignment within the Sustainable Infrastructure - Engineering division. These roles offer the chance to contribute to essential water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the state.
This is an excellent opportunity for engineers with strong experience in mechanical design, technical investigations, engineering governance, and Safety in Design (SiD). The role also includes occasional site visits (approximately once per month, depending on project needs).
About the Role
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will act as an experienced practitioner, providing technical expertise across mechanical engineering matters. You will deliver high‑level investigation, design, review, systems development, audit, and advisory services supporting public sector's mechanical standards and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Safety Leadership
- Champion safe work practices and uphold WHS responsibilities
- Lead and promote Safety in Design (SiD) across mechanical engineering activities
- Ensure risks across the asset life cycle are minimised as far as reasonably practicable
Mechanical Engineering Design & Support
- Provide specialist support across mechanical engineering matters
- Support investigations, concept design, detailed design, and reviews
- Work closely with the Principal Mechanical Engineer to develop capability within the team
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
- Provide accurate, timely engineering documentation
- Liaise with contractors, vendors, and service providers
- Support development of operational and maintenance strategies
People & Culture
- Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to knowledge sharing
- Engage with stakeholders to deliver engineering outcomes aligned with expectations
Technical Governance & Innovation
- Contribute to reviewing and improving SA Water's mechanical engineering standards
- Keep up to date with emerging technologies and industry best practice
- Support adoption of new technologies where beneficial
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Tertiary qualification in Mechanical, Civil, or Hydraulic Engineering
- Detailed knowledge of mechanical engineering procedures in water or large engineering organisations
- Strong experience delivering investigations, options assessments, concept and detailed design
- Experience reviewing and developing engineering technical standards
- Demonstrated experience managing complex or critical mechanical engineering investigations
Desirable:
- Post‑graduate qualifications
- CPEng or eligibility for Chartered status with Engineers Australia
- Experience auditing designs prepared by others
- Exposure to installation and commissioning activities
