In this role, you will research, translate, analyse, and summarise Australian news and current affairs content in Japanese for reporting to Head Office. Coverage areas include Australia-Japan relations, politics, economics, public policy, and geopolitical developments across Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct research and prepare concise reports, summaries, presentations, and briefings (Word, PowerPoint, etc.) for Head Office.
• Monitor and analyse political, economic, and geopolitical developments across Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific region.
• Research industry developments in:
• Critical minerals and mining
• Energy (natural gas, coal, CCS)
• Infrastructure (power, utilities, data centres, social infrastructure)
• Food and agribusiness
• Track and report on Australian foreign policy, including:
• Australia's engagement with the Pacific and ASEAN
• Australian Politics and Economy
• Australia-Japan relations
• Australia-Japan-United States trilateral cooperation
• Attend seminars, conferences, and stakeholder meetings, and prepare timely meeting notes and summary reports in Japanese.
• Build and maintain relationships with external experts, including think tanks, academic institutions, and industry specialists.
• Manage external research projects and coordinate with outsourced research providers to ensure high-quality deliverables.
• Travel within Australia, Pacific Island countries, and Japan as required, and prepare reports on findings and activities.
• Liaise closely with Head Office regarding research activities and intelligence gathering.
• Perform additional duties and special projects as required.

About You

• Native-level or business-fluent Japanese with excellent Japanese writing and reporting skills.
• Experience researching, analysing, translating, or summarising news articles, policy developments, or market intelligence is highly desirable.
• Background in journalism, media, research, government, consulting, public policy, international relations, economics, or a related field will be highly regarded.
• Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
• Unlimited Australian work rights (Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Partner Visa holder).
