HOBAN Recruitment is recruiting for the role of Assistant Director - Policy Officer (EL1 level ) on behalf of our client, a major Federal Government agency. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key leadership role in the development and delivery of strategic policy initiatives that shape government decision-making and improve outcomes for Australians.
This role can be located in either SYDNEY or CANBERRA.
About the Role
As an EL1 level Assistant Director - Policy, you will provide high-level policy advice, lead complex policy projects, and engage with senior executives and key stakeholders across government and industry. This role will suit a highly motivated policy professional with a strong understanding of government processes and an ability to navigate complex political environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and implementation of strategic policy initiatives aligned with government priorities.
- Provide expert policy advice to senior executives and contribute to evidence-based decision-making.
- Prepare high-quality written materials, including Cabinet submissions, ministerial briefs, and policy papers.
- Manage and deliver complex policy projects within tight timeframes.
- Conduct research, analysis, and stakeholder consultation to inform policy development.
- Represent the agency in interdepartmental committees, working groups, and external forums.
- Build and maintain productive relationships across government, industry, and community sectors.
- Promote continuous improvement in policy processes and team capability.

About You
You are a results-driven policy professional who brings strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills to every challenge. You excel in complex environments and are confident managing multiple priorities to deliver high-quality outcomes.
To be successful, you will have:
- Demonstrated experience leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of complex policy initiatives.
- Strong understanding of public policy development and government processes (Cabinet, Budget, and parliamentary).
- Proven ability to provide authoritative and well-reasoned policy advice to senior executives.
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, including with First Nations partners.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare persuasive briefs and reports.
- Sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Tertiary qualifications in public policy, political science, economics, law, or a related discipline (desirable).
